Following a very successful first year at Northiam Kestrel Gymnastics & dance academy held an open day and exhibition in October to showcase the success of the club and to help raise funds for new equipment. Welcoming more that 150 people through the door, with 40+ participants the club raised sufficient funds, which added to money already collected from a sponsored walk during the summer, to purchase a new gymnastics air track. This new piece of equipment will arrive later this autumn and increase further the fabulous gymnastic facilities. For further details go to the Club section of the website.

The Management Committee at the sports hall with the help of Adrian Gaylon, Rother Sports Development Officer, have been successful in attracting a Gymnastic club to the sports hall by offering them financial assistance to buy much needed new equipment and to prepare the sports hall floor for accommodating fixed equipment. This exciting new club run by an enthusiastic and experienced team further boosts the growing number of activities now available for the community. Details of the new club can be found in the ‘Club’ section of the website.

Further background information supplied by the club is below:

Kestrel Gymnastics Academy was set up in January 2008 by Gary and Tracey Crawford with the help from Bodiam Manor School.

To start with the club had very little equipment and just over 40 gymnasts and volunteer coaches.

In October 2008 we joined British gymnastics, which now makes us a recognised club within this large governing body. This is a very exciting time as we move forward and grow.

In August 2010, Bodiam Manor School went into liquidation and the club then found its self with no venue. This was not to stop us but made us more determined to make the club a success. Whilst looking for a new venue we found the Pretious Sports Hall in Northiam and at the same time were asked to keep the club running at Bodiam School when it opened again under new ownership. With our exciting new venue in Northiam and our existing base in Bodiam the club is growing and now has in excess of 80 gymnasts who train on a regular basis; this also includes adult gymnastics and cheerleading groups. We also have several parent volunteers who are aiming to do coaching exams.

As we look to the future of the club very positively and we hope in the next few months to have a squad group who will be expected to train 3 to 4 times a week with the hope of them competing in county and regional level. This is very much a realistic aim for some of our gymnasts.

Our future aims for the club are:

To our own premises

To increase our range of equipment

To run additional classes i.e. Baby gym, preschool, parkour and cheerleading groups

To get parents more involved with volunteering and fund raising (friends group).

Having successfully utilised the Awards for All Funding last year the Management Committee have now secured substantial funding from the Big Lottery and have this money available to help further develop the Community Pretious Sports Hall in Northiam.

The Sports Hall Management Committee have developed a proposal for utilising this funding and work is now underway to help further realise the potential of the Pretious Sports Hall and increase the awareness of the facilities to a wider community. The proposal also involves improving / developing new ‘Sports Hall officer’ roles and responsibilities and providing a better hub within the sports hall office for contacts and information as well as generally improving the service we provide to existing and potential users. More information will be made available at the Annual General Meeting which will be held early in 2012 (date to be announced soon).

An important part of this new plan is that there will be a new sports hall website – this is now just about developed and will hopefully be live at the end of the year. Amongst other things on the website there will be a general calendar with links to each of the current clubs where details will be posted about the club activities, times, prices etc. There will hopefully be lots of photo’s as well.

The sports hall office is also being improved so it can be the hub for club information and the point of contact for enquiries which will be handled by the new Sports Hall Officers. It has already been decorated and a telephone line and internet connection is now established. Equipment has been ordered and the office will be equipped with the following:

Sports Hall officer desk with phone, answer phone, pc/internet connection, printer

New notice boards

White board

Lockers

Water boiler

Balls being kicked into the lights can seriously damage the fittings as well as blow the bulbs’ which are exceedingly expensive to replace. The Sports Hall Officer will be logging which groups / clubs are responsible for hitting balls up into the lights and if any damage is done these clubs will be held responsible and will have to pay….so beware and use the sports hall responsibly please!
